Seventh-day Adventism: The Movement of a Pseudo-Gospel
Abstract: This article provides a theological analysis of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA), problematizing its growing acceptance as an orthodox evangelical Christian denomination. Despite its significant demographic and media expansion in Brazil, the study postulates that Adventism constitutes a pseudo-gospel by departing from the foundational theological premises of historical Protestantism. Methodologically, the research conducts a historical-critical review that spans the origins of the movement in the 19th century - from the Millerite Great Disappointment of 1844 to the doctrinal consolidation promoted by Hiram Edson, Joseph Bates, and Ellen G. White. The central scope of the investigation consists of critically examining exclusive Adventist dogmas in contrast to the principle of Sola Scriptura and orthodox biblical exegesis. Among the refuted theological postulates are the elevation of White's writings to a degree of authoritative inspiration, the doctrine of the Investigative Judgment (which infers the incompleteness of the atonement on the cross), the identification of Satan as the scapegoat, the belief that Jesus is the Archangel Michael, annihilationism, as well as the legalistic imposition of Sabbath observance and dietary restrictions. It is concluded that Adventism merges Christian truths with severe hermeneutical misconceptions, legalism, and soteriological synergism. Thus, by anchoring part of its dogmatics in extrabiblical revelations and exclusivist postures, the SDA Church presents profound structural divergences that irrefutably distance it from classical evangelicalism, resembling, in practical terms, first-century Pharisaism.
